China banned YouTube for Tibet violence

China has blocked domestic access to YouTube after videos showing the violence in Tibet appeared on the site. The Chinese government has not officially commented on the move, but internet users in China trying to access YouTube get a blank screen. Other sites, such as the web pages for the BBC, The Guardian and Flickr, have also been blocked. There have also been reports that internet cafes in Tibet are being shut down by the army, eager to avert a repeat of the footage that leaked out of Burmese protests against the ruling junta in that country.

“In terms of the media there is no question that the Chinese Government has imposed a lockdown of what they consider sensitive information or video footage, ” Ying Chan, journalism and media studies director at the University of Hong Kong, told Al Jazeera. Video sharing sites based in China such as Tudou.com and 56.com are not hosting content about the Tibet unrest, which has already claimed many lives and appears to be spreading. At the start of the year the Chinese government announced that video sharing sites would have to be state controlled but backed down after a week of heavy lobbying and said that the new laws did not apply to existing web sites.

Seriously… who here thinks students in Beijing should sneak into the opening ceremonies of the olympics and recreate the Tank Man incident of 89′s Beijing Massacre? They could disguise the tank props and put them together and then at a key moment run onto the field, assemble the tanks in a column and then out comes the Tank Man.

China shot its own people and deserves to be branded the true oppressive regime they are.

The chinese government could have just requested that the videos be removed, the blanket ban on media sites just shows how they go about things.
The best way people can help is by raising awareness of whats going on in Tibet, remember the aacs code? China can’t silence the entire internet.

How pathetic and sad. Turkey and China has blocked access to Youtube far too many times and without good reason in most of’ em. Not that a valid reason to ban anything exists in the first place. They are not worthy of running the Olympic Games.

Youtube is banned in China from time to time, so these are no news per se. Plus the fact of course that pretty much every internet user in China uses a proxy server to get around the blocks.

Not a smart move for China. Most of few available videos on YouTube shows race riots where violent Tibetan mobs marauding the streets attack ethic Chinese people and burning down Chinese owned businesses, rather than police brutalizing peaceful protesters. Why would they block it if it’s in their favor?

I’ve met the dalai lama, there’s none of that saint crap he has; all he is, is someone who endlessly talks and you have no idea what he’s getting at, if you read his translated books, then it’s a different story.

“cheap labour” is cheap because 1 rmb is roughly 10 dollars, that’s why u guys consider it cheap, now from their perspective they can still survive. It’s called Offshoring.

I am really interested to see how china will deal with all the foreign media for the olympic games. What happens when they cover protests and the political climate? The olympic games are an unprecedented opportunity for protest and to embarrass the communist party. What happens when references are made to the tiananmen square massacre?

It’s funny that when some minor, often overexaggerated crap happens in the US, the boards are full with self-righteous rhetoric and hateful anti-US commentary. When actual non-conspiratorial human right violations happen in places like China, everyone makes that “eh, that sucks” shrug and moves on to another subject. I’m saying it is funny but I’m not really laughing…

Go go Tibet independence! Down the communist goverments! Up the democracy and freedom! That’s why Dalai Lama was speaking about “genocide” and I believe than it’s right. Boycott the Olympic games!

  42. watchit
    March 18th, 2008 | 06:28

This time the riot was really well planned, the big gathering of the Chinese communist party and right before the Olympics, good timing I have to say. My friend works for the Southwest branch of a big news agency, he told me on the phone that most rioters are young people(teenagers as he said) and monks(Dalai’s followers, which is less than 1/5 of all the monks in Tibet). Many Chinese civilians were killed, and many stores, buildings and vehicles owned by them were burned, many tibetans were killed as well…

I just wish everything will be end soon, no more dies, no more lies.
